Some Questions you may have for us

  • TCM naturally heals humans using three keys: acupuncture, herbal remedies and cupping therapy. Though commonly used together as a powerful holistic approach, each can be just as dynamic on their own. TCM believes the processes of the human body are interrelated and connected to the surrounding environment. And so, it treats the underlying root of health issues rather than the symptoms on the surface--all while strengthening the body’s internal defenses and enhancing its ability to sustain optimal health.

  • Acupuncture is an ancient system of classical Chinese medicine that has been working to keep people healthy for over 2,500 years. Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-thin needles at key points on the body. These needles interact with the fascial network (our internal messenger system) to alter brain chemistry and stimulate internal responses, such as regulating hormones like cortisol, releasing pain-relieving endorphins, increasing circulation, reducing inflammation and more. Primary acupuncture benefits include managing pain, digestion, sleep, and hormone-related health--as well as mental health issues like stress, anxiety and depression.

  • Acupuncture is scientifically proven for more than 300 health conditions! Hair-thin needles inserted in specific combinations at specific points interact with our internal messenger system by releasing chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, brain, etc. These biochemical changes stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. Some studies suggest that the pain-killing action is associated with the release of natural endorphins, and others that inserting needles into certain points 'switches off' electrical nerve pathways that make the brain recognize pain.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing for your treatment. We will provide you with a towel to cover up if needed. It is important to eat before your treatment, even if it’s just a snack, especially if it is your first treatment or you are a diabetic. Please do not come on an empty stomach. Some people feel a little sleepy or dazed after the treatment, so do not plan on a heavy work out after our treatment.

  • A single treatment lasts about an hour. Five weeks of one-a-week treatment, with a review, is standard.

  • Many patients see results after the first treatment. The majority of patients within the first 2-3 sessions. And old injuries or severe injuries may take up to 5-6 sessions.

  • Acupuncture needles are hair thin and generally do not cause pain. A slight prick may be felt on the insertion, but this usually fades away and most people do not feel anything. Some experience a heaviness or pressure around the point. Others feel a heat sensation while laying on the table. Most people fall asleep during treatment and describe it as a relaxing experience overall.

What should I expect during my first Sports Medicine Acupuncture® treatment?

The provider will ask you a series of questions about your condition. They will use this knowledge to provide a comprehensive exam which may involve taking measurements, analyzing posture, analyzing squat mechanics, and specialized orthopedic tests to help them determine exactly which tissue is damaged and why it became damaged. The provider will then needle the appropriate tissues to decrease pain and restore range of motion and function. After needling, the provider may provide one or two of several modalities including: postural corrective exercises, soft tissue release, cupping, scraping, PNF stretching, taping, and herbal poultices or liniments.

  • Yes! Acupuncture is very useful in the treatment of morning sickness, insomnia and the discomforts that are often associated with pregnancy. Chinese medicine is also a great natural way to promote fertility health.

  • Yes, most patients experience some results right away. However, more chronic issues take longer to treat. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is a process; it’s like a re-education for your system that can take a while to generate the change that you want.  For most conditions, we recommend at least 8-12 treatments, once per week.  Some patients choose to come every week or every two weeks for overall health maintenance. If you have an acute condition, we may recommend two treatments per week. Your acupuncturist will give you a treatment plan after your first visit.

  • Minor bleeding is seen in about three per cent of patients, which stops after a few minutes. Around two per cent will experience bruising.

  • Any age, even babies. But with children under seven finger-tapping is used, not needles.

  • We do not process insurance in-house; however, we are happy to provide you with a receipt that has the necessary coding for you to submit to your provider. We recommend checking with your insurance company to see if you are covered for out-of-network acupuncture and, if so, what specific conditions your insurance company covers acupuncture for. We DO ACCEPT HSA/FSA accounts.
